Top 5 Reasons to Move to Urbandale, Iowa

by Peter Jones

If you’re considering moving to the Des Moines area, let me stop you here and tell you about Urbandale. It’s more than just a suburb—a place with heart, character, and a community that feels like home. I know this firsthand because I grew up here. Urbandale is where my roots run deep from elementary to middle to high school. And I’m here to tell you why it might just be the perfect place for you to call home.

1. A+ Schools That Shape Futures

Let’s start with the schools because they shaped who I am today. Urbandale Community Schools offer top-notch education, small classes, and a supportive environment where students thrive. I still remember my days at Rolling Green Elementary, moving on to Urbandale Middle School, and finally graduating as a proud Urbandale J-Hawk - even though that was in the old high school, which I know saying that dates me. Yes, the teachers here genuinely care, and the strong sense of community in the schools sets Urbandale apart.

2. Parks and Recreation Galore

If you love the outdoors, Urbandale is your playground. With over 50 parks and miles of trails, there’s no shortage of ways to stay active and enjoy Iowa’s beauty. Walker Johnston Park was practically my second home as a kid—whether it was playing soccer, biking the trails, or hanging out with friends. And now, the city keeps expanding its parks and green spaces, making it a haven for families and outdoor enthusiasts.

3. Safe and Friendly Neighborhoods

One thing everyone wants in a community is safety, and Urbandale delivers. The neighborhoods are quiet, well-kept, and filled with friendly faces. Growing up, I never thought twice about walking to a friend’s house or riding my bike around town. That sense of security and comfort still exists today, making it an ideal place to raise a family or enjoy life at your own pace.

4. A Prime Location in the Metro

Urbandale is ideally situated—you get the best suburban living with easy access to everything Des Moines offers. Want to head downtown for dinner or a show? It’s a quick drive. Need to hop on the interstate? You’re just minutes away. Plus, with shopping centers, local restaurants, and plenty of entertainment options in town, you don’t have to go far to find what you need.

If you're hungry in Urbandale, you have to check out these restaurants: the Urban Grill, the Machine Shed, and Taki Japenese Steak House, to name a few.

Thirsty and looking for an adult beverage, I recommend any of these: The Beer House, Tito's Lounge, or Blue Shark Ale House

5. A Strong Sense of Community

Here’s what truly sets Urbandale apart: the people. There’s something special about how this community comes together—for Friday night football games, city festivals like the Fourth of July parade, or just chatting with neighbors. Growing up here taught me the value of connection, and that’s a big part of why I’m so passionate about helping others find their place in this incredible city.

Final Thoughts

Urbandale isn’t just where I grew up—it’s a place I’m proud to recommend to anyone looking for a new home. With excellent schools, beautiful parks, safe neighborhoods, and a strong sense of community, it’s everything you could want in a place to live.

If you’re thinking about making a move, let’s talk. I’d love to share more about what makes Urbandale so unique—and maybe even show you around my old stomping grounds. Who knows? It might just be the perfect place for your story to begin.
